Technological advances in DNA sequencing are rapidly changing the way we treat cancer. By understanding the specific molecular changes that drive each individual cancer, it is now possible to select targeted therapies that have a better chance at success. In this seminar, Dr. Stohr will use the story of one patient to illustrate how this analysis is done and how it can enable better treatment choices.
Brad Stohr MD/PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at UCSF. He is a surgical and molecular pathologist who specializes in cancers of the prostate, bladder, and kidney. In addition, he runs a small research laboratory that studies the role of the telomerase enzyme in cancer development and progression.

Unlike normal cells, cancer cells can keep proliferating forever. This "immortality" allows cancer to spread through the body, causing destruction and often death. In this seminar, Dr. Stohr will discuss how cancer cells become immortal and how we might be able to treat cancer by targeting their immortality.
Brad Stohr MD/PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at UCSF. His laboratory studies telomeres and telomerase in human cancer. In addition, he serves as an attending physician on the autopsy service.
