Kate Hoag currently works in the Meteorology, Measurements, and Rules Division of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District as a Quality Assurance Officer / Principle Air Quality Engineer. In this role, she helps ensure the high quality of the air quality data collected by the Air District and performs data analyses to interpret the data so that it can be used throughout the agency to develop rules, air quality models, and clean air plans. She also evaluates the design of the Air District’s air monitoring network and helps inform the study design for special air quality studies. Prior to her current position at the Air District, Kate worked for over seven years in the Air Division at Region 9 US EPA, where her work in permitting and air quality analysis gave her understanding of how legislation like the Clean Air Act works to protect the public’s health and the environment.

Kate received a MS in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University where she studied fog and aerosol chemistry in the San Joaquin Valley, and a PhD in Earth and Planetary Science from UC Berkeley where she performed measurements of the stable isotopes of stratospheric CO2 to better understand global gross carbon fluxes.  She has also worked as a laboratory scientist at the School of Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill on determining the effectiveness of various biomarkers to quantify personal exposure to benzene and styrene.
