Marin Science Seminar Presentation:"Birthing Babies: What it Takes to be a Nurse Midwife" Even as a little girl, I was fascinated by “where babies come from” and knew someday I would work in obstetrics. I was premed as an undergraduate, but decided to follow my other passion, receiving my B.A. in Theatre Arts. I lived for many years in New York City working with an off-Broadway theatre company as an actress and occasional playwright. In 1993, I was introduced to the profession of midwifery by a dear friend who happened to be an obstetrician and by a venerable actress whose daughter is a midwife. The stories of women working in partnership with other women to guide and empower them through the natural process of pregnancy and the awesome transition to motherhood inspired me. I enrolled in nursing school for my midwifery education in 1995. I have been honored to work with women ever since (midwifery means “with woman”). Sheri Matteo is currently the Prima Director of Midwifery Services. She sees patients for prenatal care at the Marin Community Clinic and delivers babies at Marin General Hospital. Outside of MGH, Sheri is an Adjunct Faculty member at Touro University for their Physician Assistant/MPH program, a guest lecturer for Samuel Merritt University's Physician Assistant program, and has mentored UCSF midwifery students. Sheri has also taught childbirth education, postpartum adjustment and is a Certified Lactation Educator.

Ms. Matteo holds a B.A. in Theater Arts from Brown University and her B.S. and M.S.N. from Columbia School of Nursing in NYC.
